Where do the Ideas come from

A couple mornings ago, during my commute to my day job, (I say that like I only have one), a new scenario presented itself to me. Now mind you this is the sequel to a book I’ve already written, but this thought reminded me of a significant piece of what happened before. There was a mirror and a small child. Apparently, in this new book, the first one was 90K, the little girl gets sucked into the mirror through her feelings and her mother must come to her rescue.

I’m not a huge fan of damsel in distress stories, but this seemed to make sense, especially since her mother was the one to prevent evil this time, much like she did last time.

Whether or not the doppelgängers from the first book will make a reappearance I do not know. The child is only five and wouldn’t have read any of her mother’s horror YA books. That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have a visceral and perhaps even supernatural feel though, since she is the 20th century.

This also gives me a chance to explore the relationship between her parents, which neatly fit together at the end of the book. There is also the death which needs to be accounted for which was pivotal in the first book.

I guess I’m kind of on a roll with sequels. I finished the third book in the Near series with my angel and airship captain. I’m currently writing the sequel to Sisters (working title) with an intention of putting it somewhere others can read it.

All of this because I saw, on my morning commute, a mirror abandoned by the side of the road and immediately started thinking about how the mirror played a major role in the creation of the first book’s monsters.

What do you think? Had any good ideas appear seemingly out of nowhere for you lately?
