The role of Sameness in my Productivity

Novelty may be the spice of life, but who wants a life that is pure spice? I’m not one of those, that’s for sure. I tend to do the same things the same way on a regular basis. It’s not because I don’t care for novelty. I’ll try something new whenever I can; however, when it comes to getting things done, I need to be able to count on what kind of time I have and whether or not I’m going to be able to get into the right headspace to work on what needs working on.

So there is a certain amount of Sameness necessary for there, for me, to be productivity. I show up at my desk pretty much the same time on a regular basis. That way I can get work done.

Why haven’t I been getting more done lately? Probably because I’m not allowing myself the routine that I value so highly. Things are absolutely going to be different now that I recognize it, but that’s the reality of it for me. I haven’t been doing things the same way and over time, it has caused me to drift away from the productive habits which have been my bread and butter.

Sameness is often portrayed as something to be fought against. And in some situations, such as the dystopian nightmare shown in Equilibrium, that is absolutely necessary. However, we don’t live in that particular dystopian nightmare. (Mileage may vary on what type of dystopian nightmare we are currently living in.)

So here’s to sameness. To routine. To habit. To there being something bland for the spice to be added to. And here’s to creating more.
