Filling the Well

For those who don’t know the phrase ‘filling the well’ means to give yourself something to draw from when you create. I’m going to make this a regular part of the blog, so feel free to drop in looking specifically for thoughts on what I’m reading and watching.

What I’m Reading

Right now, I’m working on Rootwork by Tracy Cross. I’m about halfway through this novella and it’s making me want it to be scarier, but I may just be jumping the gun regarding the set up. It’s possible that the first half of the book is really setting me up for something that’s absolutely awful about to happen. Shoutout to the Horror Heauxs Support Group Podcast/Book Club for the recommendation and the great conversation around the book.

I am also working my way through The Nap Ministry’s Rest Deck. Not quite a book, but definitely a manifesto against Grind Culture. It reminds us that we need to rest. Our worth is NOT tied to our productivity.

Finally, and the others in the S&S book club are gonna be horrified, I still haven’t finished Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. I started it. I got about 20% of the way in and then something else shiny drew me away (recent books I’ve read include Clown in a Cornfield and The Haunting of Hill House) and I still have not finished it. However, this is me saying I’m gonna finish that gosh-darn book.

What I’m Watching

The Matrix is in heavy rotation in my house. I’ve probably seen this movie a dozen times in the past month. I LOVE this movie. However, I should probably find something new to watch as I fall asleep. The other movie I normally sleep to is Hannibal, so time to find something new all around.

I posted about my recent watching of American Fiction and The American Society of Magical Negroes, both of which I found to be absolutely wonderful movies.

I have not finished the first season of My Happy Marriage on Netflix, which is something of a shame. It seems like it’s getting better with each passing episode. I’ve made it to episode 8.

So what are you reading or watching that’s fun? I’m open to recommendations.
