Nano-Prep and Me

Hey there and welcome back. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? If you’re looking for what I’ve been up to lately, feel free to check out the podcast I have over at http://anchor.fm/alledria. That’s where I’ve been posting most of my updates once a week to make sure people know I’m still alive. However, here I am on my blog, once more reminding people that I live. It is currently the end of October which means guess what Nano will be upon us very soon.

What is Nano?

Nano or Nanowrimo or National Novel Writing Month is a writing challenge which predominantly happens in November and asks that someone write approximately 50K words in 30 days. Of course, there are shades of difference to this, but that’s the basics. You can sign up for the challenge at www.nanowrimo.org. I’m on there is our.lady.of.ashes and I’d love for you to friend me if you’re taking up the flag.

Why would anyone do this to themselves?

To prove you can. That’s the long and short of it, to prove to one’s self that they can complete this challenge. There is also something to be said for being able to kickstart a project by giving yourself a deadline. This is also a good reason to give it a shot.

How does one prepare for Nano?

That completely depends on you as a person. I’ve had years (I’ve been participating off and on since 2005) where I’ve done long detailed outlines. I’ve also had years where I have woken up on the first of November and just started writing. Both of those are totally valid approaches. That being said, there is an entire month Prep-Tober for those who need more extensive planning in their lives. October is very often a somewhat busy month for me as I work in tourism in a Spooky town, so October one those months when I don’t have a heck of a lot of time. However, this year, thanks to some changes in my life, I’ve managed to put together a fairly good idea of what I intend to write.

So what are you writing this year?

If you’re interested in knowing what I’m writing, please pay attention here at the blog and check out my Twitch stream NoirLadyLuck for more information. I will probably be streaming at least one writing session a day during November to allow me to get my writing done. What I can say at this point is that it’s going to be partially historical fiction, which will be AWESOME because I have never attempted a serious piece of historical fiction before.  I’m going to weave some story from nowadays into a historical fiction piece and it’s going to be amazing. That being said, I cannot say there aren’t going to be days when it is just a dead slog. That’s the nature of dealing with writing, some days are flying high and others are not. I like to think I’ve got enough of a system that the slog days are going to be fewer and further between, but we’re going to see how it goes through the joy of Nano this year.

So what are you up to?

Hey, hey, hey, drop me a line here at the blog or on my email alledria@alledriahurt.com to let me know what you’re up to. Are you prepping like mad or sitting pretty? Are you caught completely unawares that this existed and now want to give it a shot? All of these are valid things and I want to hear from you. So like I said, drop me a line somehow to let me know what you are up to.
