Rewatching Rose Red [Things I Love]

For those of you who don’t know, I rewatch a lot of the same movies over and over again. Rose Red is one of those movies I watch fairly consistently. Yes, I realize it is actually a made for TV movie which is about five hours long. I enjoy it; therefore, I keep rewatching it. Plus, like the Shawshank Redemption, I’ve seen it so many times if I fall asleep during it, I can wake up and know exactly where I am in the movie.

I love a lot of things about this movie and there are a couple of things I dislike, this post is about the stuff I love.

I love Rose Red as a haunted house. The Heartbreaker House. I have a thing for old rambling crumbling manses. I don’t spend a lot of time on Pinterest, but when I do, I get sucked down into the rabbit hole of abandoned places pretty easily. It’s just one of those things with me. I got a chance to tour castles when I lived in Europe and even the best maintained castle has some element of time to it. Maybe that’s what I’m really interested in: time. You can see the markers of time everywhere you look, especially if you look for them. A large part of human existence seems to be living in denial of the markers of time: cracks in the sidewalk, gray hair, and sprawling ivy.

The cast of characters intrigues me. In the movie, there are a number of different people, all of them different, though if you pay enough attention in King you’ll find archetypes of each of the characters elsewhere. I notice, you don’t get as many of them together as you get in Rose Red though. Personally, my favorite character is Nick, the eccentric Brit who thinks champagne and eggs go together. I’ll talk about my least favorite character in a separate post.

I could go on for a while about the things I love about this movie, but those are the top two.
