100k in a Month Update

There you have it.

So as you can see, I made my goal for week 2 as well. 25,454 for the week. Also, as you can see, I made a snafu in the middle of the week and didn’t make my 5k for the day. (See the purple block on day 12.) I’m learning new things about my process. Some of this stuff I already kinda knew. Others have crept up on me as I’ve been going through this. What’s the biggest thing I learned this week?

I AM A PROCRASTINATOR.

Two days last week, I ended up staying up what for me is late in order to make my word count. Or in the case of the 12th, make some word count and leave the rest for the next day. How did this happen? I spent the day playing around on Twitter and staring at cat videos on Facebook. I know exactly how it happened. Unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out how to make that stop. When you have essentially free reign over your day, you can do what you want. Truthfully, you could get a lot done that way. You can also manage to get nothing done until your husband comes home and then have to stay up late and make up for all the hours you wasted during the day, which was the case for me on Monday and Wednesday. Once I open my file for the day, I can usually get at least to 2.5k before I need to take a break and look at something else. However, it’s mostly getting the file open in the first place. My biggest nemesis is my phone. I don’t work on my phone very often. I play on my phone. It has Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. All glorious ways to completely lose track of time.

What’s my solution? I don’t have one yet. I’m working on that. However, I do know there is a problem and that is the first step to finding a solution. It could be that I need to put my phone on airplane mode until I finish my word count for the day so I cannot hear those wonderful notifications that validate my poor little writer soul. We shall see. I have the option of writing on the weekend, but I don’t have to per the rules of the game. I only have to write 5k for 20 days. Here’s to seeing what I learn next week.
